History of City Palace

Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, belonging to the Kachwaha Rajput clan, built the City Palace Jaipur between 1729 and 1732. He was the founder of the city of Jaipur. Amber, which is situated at a distance of 11 km from Jaipur, served as their earlier capital. With population growth and water scarcity, he decided to shift the capital to Jaipur. He approached Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, a notable architect of that time, to design the architecture of the city. Within four years, major palaces were built in the city, including the City Palace Jaipur, located in the central northeast part of the city. The Palace was the venue for various religious and cultural events.

The architecture of City Palace Jaipur

City Palace Jaipur houses the famous Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum and the residence of the royal family of Jaipur. The palace reflects an exquisite blend of Indian, Mughal, and European architectural styles which can be seen in its grand pillars, jali work or latticework, and carved marble interiors. It is a huge complex consisting of several buildings, pavilions, courtyards, and beautiful gardens.

It covers one-seventh of the old city of Jaipur, spreading over a large area. The planners planned Jaipur as one of the earliest cities in India.

Two architects, Vidyadhar Bhattacharya and Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob, planned the city’s urban layout and structures, including the Jaipur City Palace. The architects incorporated the principles of Shilpa Shastra and Vastu Shastra with the major architectural styles of the world. The use of red and pink sandstone is one of the attractive architectural features of this magnificent City Palace Jaipur. Crystal chandeliers, historic gilded wall decorations, and intricate carvings adorn the interior of the palace. There is a special collection of relics and antiquities owned by the royal family over the centuries.

The most famous interesting item in City Palace is the 2 Sterling Silver Jars. Who has officially recorded their name in the Guinness Book of World Records. This jar is one of the purest silver jars in the world.

Best Time To Visit City Palace

The best time to visit would be during the winter months, from November to February, when the weather is pleasant and cool.

During these months, you can comfortably explore the palace without the scorching heat bothering you since the temperature ranges between 10-27 degrees Celsius. Moreover, the palace looks magnificent during the winter with a beautiful sunset in the background.
However, keep in mind that the palace may be crowded as the peak tourist season also attracts many visitors. If you prefer fewer crowds, you could consider visiting in the shoulder season, which is from September to October or March to April, when the weather is still pleasant, and the crowds are relatively less.

The entry fee for foreign visitors is INR 700 per person and for Indian citizens, it is INR 300 per person. However, these fees are subject to change, and it is best to check with the official website or the ticket counter for updated pricing before planning your visit. Additionally, there may be separate fees for camera usage, audio guides, and special exhibitions, which you may need to pay separately.
